More than 500 distinguished guests gathered on 21st February, the third day of the Lunar New Year, in celebration of the Year of the Goat at Spring Reception 2015. Into the fifth year, the Spring Reception is an annual event jointly organised by Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) and Business China; with the newly established Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre (SCCC) joining in for the first time this year. It was our pleasure to have Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour.
Other distinguished guests include Minister Gan Kim Yong, Minister Chan Chun Sing, Senior Minister of State Mrs Josephine Teo, Senior Minister of State Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State Ms Sim Ann, Parliamentary Secretary Ms Low Yen Ling, Members of Parliament, foreign diplomats and dignitaries.
In his speech, Minister Ng applauded SFCCA’s and Business China’s continuous efforts in engaging Singaporeans and promoting Chinese language and culture. He said, “SFCCA kept the Chinese language and culture alive amongst the Singaporean Chinese community. They had also organised many activities that promoted social harmony and integration in our multicultural society. Similarly, Business China encouraged Singaporeans to maintain their bilingual and bicultural capability to remain engaged with China, so as to tap on the bountiful opportunities available in China and enhance bilateral collaborations.”
With regards to SCCC, Minister Ng congratulated its establishment and expressed confidence that the completion of the cultural centre building will be yet another significant milestone in Singapore’s cultural history. This year’s Spring Reception is SCCC’s first since its inauguration in 2014.
In his welcome address, President of SFCCA and Chairman of Business China and SCCC, Mr Chua Thian Poh shared that the SFCCA is in the midst of publishing and launching the book “A General History of Chinese in Singapore”. He said, “This book is a record of our pioneers’ contributions and our country’s developments from the humble beginnings. Through this book, SFCCA hopes to evoke memories of our pioneers’ perseverance, and give impetus to their legacy.” The book is slated to be launched in November this year.
Business China, in conjunction with its 8th anniversary and the 25th Anniversary of Singapore-China Diplomatic Relations, will be publishing a special edition commemorative book to mark this special year.
The Spring Reception then observed the tradition of exchanging well-wishes in a circle, signifying unity and harmony. Thereafter, musicians, singers and dancers from Singapore Amoy Association, Dunman High School Chinese Orchestra and Guzheng Ensemble, Wu Yue Dance Studio Arts Troupe as well as Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan lined up a series of colourful celebratory performances to further drum up the festive atmosphere.
