On April 5, 2024, a physical closed-door “坡县· 您的看法？” discussion session was held at Huone Singapore, drawing an impressive turnout of 51 attendees, including students and young professionals.
Amidst the vibrant atmosphere, speakers Dr. Zhou Zhaocheng and Associate Professor Chen Zhirui delved into the controversial term “坡县”. Drawing from his perspective as a new immigrant, Dr. Zhou Zhaocheng meticulously shared the five aspects that underlie the emergence of the term and offered insightful analysis of each aspect. Associate Professor Chen Zhirui then followed by providing a linguistic perspective of the term and unraveling its origins, shedding light on the factors influencing its acceptance or rejection among people.
We were honoured to have Ms. Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of National Development, grace the event with her presence. She emphasised the importance of our youth looking beyond Singapore to widen their horizons and staying culturally sensitive to create an inclusive society.
