14 I will now say a few words in English. Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. A very warm welcome to the 17th edition of the FutureChina Global Forum.
15 Today, our focus is on AI. There is no shortage of AI forums in the world. So why add another one? For some of us here, chances are we are following AI developments mainly in English. Today’s bilingual forum offers a window into China’s rapid advances in AI, how they are being applied, and what these developments could mean for businesses and society. By bringing together perspectives from China and around the world, we hope to gain new insights and deepen understanding when different experiences and ideas meet. This is at the heart of what Business China does – promoting bilingualism, biculturalism, to operate across languages and cultures, and form stronger connections across communities.
16 Locally, we are also starting to hear about a different kind of bilingualism which is AI bilingualism. As AI moves towards large-scale application and adoption, success will depend on more than the technology itself. It requires people or AI bilinguals as we call them, who can combine their deep domain expertise with the ability to understand and apply AI. By doing so, they help their organisations, industries and the broader ecosystem to create more value. As AI becomes more deeply embedded across industries, we will indeed need many more AI bilinguals.
17 But, even the right technology and right people cannot by themselves guarantee successful partnerships. Success depends on commercial viability, business fit, ability to adapt to different markets, and crucially, trust between partners. That trust enables partners to invest, share risks, and grow their businesses together. Trust must also extend to the public. People want assurance that their data is protected, that the technology is reliable, and that someone remains accountable for the decisions it informs. Without such confidence, adoption will slow. Some experts have also called for the development of AI to be slowed down to better manage risks. Others believe differently. We have seen this hotly debated recently. Regardless, good governance can help to create the confidence needed for innovation to be adopted responsibly and at scale. These considerations are central to the theme of this year’s Forum: “Strengthening Resilience, Rebuilding Trust”.
18 We each bring different strengths to the discussions. By exchanging ideas and learning from one another, we can shorten the learning curve, build greater confidence in how AI is developed, and better understand what it takes to translate technology into solutions that work in different markets.
19 Finally, I would like to thank our speakers for the time and thought they have put into today’s discussions, and our participants and partners for your strong support. Some of you have travelled from around the world to be here with us today, and we greatly appreciate you making the journey. We are gathering on the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival – a time traditionally associated with reunion. In that spirit, I hope today’s Forum will also bring people and perspectives together and strengthen our connections and trust that will carry us forward.
20 Thank you.
