SINGAPORE, 13 July 2017 – Organised by Business China and into its eighth year, the FutureChina Global Forum 2017 (FCGF) brings together over 60 China experts and some 500 corporate leaders, senior executives and renowned academics for an in-depth discussion into the opportunities in the future economy and areas for potential collaboration in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

On Singapore’s role in the BRI, Mr Teo Chee Hean, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Co-Chairman for Singapore-China Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation, said: “Cooperation between Singapore and China on the Belt and Road has much potential for taking our bilateral relations to the next level. The overarching concept of the Belt and Road is ‘Connectivity’: going beyond individual projects to form a network; beyond physical links to include digital and human networks; leveraging on international and institutional financial resources; and working inclusively with partners all along the Belt and Road. Singapore will work with China to enhance Physical and Digital Connectivity, Financial Connectivity and People-to-People Connectivity.”

In his welcome address, Chairman of Business China, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, said: “Business China is optimistic about the opportunities brought about by the Belt and Road Initiative. We will continue to strengthen the Singapore-China savvy network to boost people-to-people interconnectivity. We foresee this network will ignite positive energy to fuel the Future Economy that Singapore is going to shape. The gradual growth of this network will become a regional connector that plugs Singapore to the regional market network.”

Themed “Strengthening Partnerships: In The Future Economy, Belt and Road”, FCGF 2017 looks into the current state of China’s economy and envisages common possibilities for Singapore and China in the future economy. The ideas and sharing by industry leaders over the two days provide much room for exploration and development. Further, the BRI has provided great impetus for countries and companies in the region to deliberate their roles and opportunities together. Thought leaders and intermediaries such as Mr Pang Yee Ean, Director General, Investments, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and Mr Teo Siong Seng, Chairman, Singapore Business Federation; Managing Director, Pacific International Lines Pte Ltd will proffer their thoughts on both the geopolitical and economic dimensions in the BRI, as well as how third-party countries can leverage on opportunities in the BRI.

Business China strengthens partnerships and widens reach with 10 MoU signed

During the opening lunch, Business China also signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with a total of 10 local and Chinese organisations and enterprises ranging from the finance sectors to governmental entities.

Ms Sun Xueling, CEO of Business China, said “The MoUs will allow us to capitalise on like-minded partners to strengthen Singapore’s role in China’s development and open up partnerships. For example, the MoU with the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region People’s Government will create opportunities for Singapore companies in connectivity projects to serve the larger Southern Transport Corridor, the MoU with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Belt and Road Industrial Alliance highlights the importance of technology know-how in the new economy, and the MoU with the Innovation Cooperation Centre (Bangkok) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is part of our initiative to develop alliances and opportunities for third country collaboration.”

These organisations and enterprises include: Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region People’s Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Holdings Co Ltd, Bank of China, China Enterprises Association (Singapore), Nanyang Technological University Alumni Affairs Office, National University of Singapore, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) Limited, Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China (SingCham), Singapore-China Business Association, and Guangdong Enterprise Association (Singapore).

These MoUs aim to lay the foundation to promote meaningful win-win engagements among Business China’s members, as well as with Chinese and global organisations and enterprises. Business China will continue to engage in efforts to be an enabling node between the world and China through a robust people-to-people network.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will grace the Closing Dinner tomorrow as keynote speaker. He will also be presenting the Business China Awards as the Guest-of-Honour, held in conjunction with Business China’s 10th anniversary celebration.
