SINGAPORE, 18 July 2016 – The seventh edition of the FutureChina Global Forum (FCGF 2016) commenced today, with over 450 corporate leaders, senior executives, entrepreneurs and leading academics gathering to examine the opportunities that China’s new economy can bring. Organised by Business China, the two-day Forum will facilitate exchanges of insights, led by 70 speakers, on hot-button issues surrounding China’s role in the world economy.

In his welcome address, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Business China Board Director and Chairman of the FutureChina Committee, said: “China’s development is not just about the well-being of her 1.4 billion citizens. In a world that is highly globalised and inter-connected, if China does not do well, the region and the world would be affected. A China that is stable, capable and vibrant can only be beneficial to the region and the world.”

Assessing China’s reform agenda

Themed “Transformation or stagnation: What the new economy heralds for China and the region”, FCGF 2016 seeks to understand possible future trajectories and identify potential growth sectors and market segments, based on evaluations of China’s latest economic reform agendas and analyses of their current status of implementation.

In his opening speech, Mr Teo Chee Hean, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Co-Chairman of the Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation with China, said: “China’s economic transformation will bring new challenges. There will be difficult trade-offs to be made. But China has an impressive record of successfully managing reform and restructuring the economy. There will be many opportunities created in new markets and new fields in our growing Asia-Pacific region. Companies from China can access financial, legal and arbitration services here in Singapore. They can also work with Singapore companies to tap the new growth opportunities in the Digital Economy, and seek new partners in the vibrant community of companies from many countries based in Singapore to enter third countries.”

The Forum’s opening plenary session featured Amb Chen Xiaodong, China’s Ambassador to Singapore; Mr Wu Lebin, Board Chairman, Chinese Academy of Sciences Holdings; Ms Nina Yang, COO, Singbridge, Ascendas-Singbridge Group; and Mr Anthony Tan, Deputy CEO, Singapore Press Holdings, on the topic: “Pursuing the reform agenda while sustaining growth”. Other panel discussions will examine topics such as ASEAN-China and United States-China relations, as well as China’s latest business landscape, e-commerce developments and financial markets and services.

Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies, will speak at the Closing Lunch tomorrow to share his perspectives on China’s new economy and its significance for Singapore and the region.

The FCGF 2016 will also see the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Business China and China Internet Development Foundation today. The MOU seeks to strengthen international and bilateral collaboration in developing the cyberspace and Internet technology sectors.
