MEDIA RELEASE: Business China Youth Showdown – Eunoia Junior College clinches championship in finals

Singapore, 5 July 2017 – This afternoon, finalist teams from the Business China Youth Showdown presented their research on the theme “Global or Local? Opportunities for Youths in the Future Economy”, with Eunoia Junior College emerging as the champion for the first time. Hwa Chong Institution (Team 1) concluded as 1st runner-up, while Hwa Chong Institution (Team 2) finished a close 2nd runner-up. Some 150 students from various Junior Colleges, IP Schools, Polytechnics and Universities attended the finals.

This year’s theme featured the challenges and opportunities of the future economy and its implications for youth entrepreneurship. The five finalist teams showcased their findings creatively through innovative videos and skits, on top of PowerPoint presentations, in both Mandarin and English.

The Guest-of-Honour was Mr Chia Kim Huat, Regional Head, Corporate and Transnational Practice, Rajah & Tann LLP and Business China Go East Committee Member. In his welcome remarks, Mr Chia encouraged young Singaporeans to take their study of the Chinese language seriously, referring to it as the “language of a new trade” with high economic value in the digital economy.

The judging panel consisted of Dr Zhou Zhao Cheng, Vice President (New Markets), Singapore Press Holdings Ltd, and Mr Benjamin Cheong, Partner, Technology, Media and Telecommunications/ Competition Practice, Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP.

The annual Business China Youth Showdown aims to equip youths with a deeper understanding of the forces shaping China’s emergence as a global power in relevance to Singapore. This bilingual national platform provides the opportunity for Singaporean youths to explore hot-button China topics with like-minded peers.

The top three teams of the Youth Showdown will be awarded complimentary access to the FutureChina Global Forum (FCGF) held on 13 and 14 July at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. The FCGF 2017 will be held in conjunction with Business China’s 10th anniversary celebration and graced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.
