About 2,000 underprivileged households received over $200,000 worth of goodie bags
SINGAPORE, 1 February 2023 – With help from local supermarket chain Sheng Siong and Grab, a leading superapp in Southeast Asia, Business China packed and distributed over $200,000 worth of goodies bags to 2,000 underprivileged households from 25th to 30th January, to spread the joy of Chinese New Year.
Each goodie bag contains food items and Sheng Siong vouchers. These goodie bags are a result of the donations by Business China’s partners and business leaders during its annual Chinese New Year reunion gathering held on 19 January 2023 at Esplanade Mall’s Straits Chinese Nonya Restaurant.
Dr Koh Poh Koon, Senior Minister of State for Manpower, Sustainability and the Environment, Business China Board Director, and Chairman of Business Leaders Group Sub-committee, said: “As we recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Business China recognises the need to step up its efforts in caring for those in need amongst us. We hope these goodie bags go in some ways to bring some festive cheer to these families as they celebrate Chinese New Year.”
Sheng Siong and Grab are two such organisations that care deeply about the less fortunate with their assistance in the goodie bag distribution campaign. Sheng Siong lent a helping hand by offering discounts on food items and vouchers as well as packing goodie bags. Thus, Business China was able to get more out of each goodie bag, and include more food items and vouchers.
On the other hand, Grab contributed to the festive cheer with 200 Grab delivery- and driver-partners and 200 Grab employees volunteering their time to support the delivery efforts.
Mr Ho Chee Hin, CEO of Business China, said: “We recognise that while the wider community is adapting to live with COVID-19 in our midst, the struggle to cope amid uncertain times may prove harder for Singaporeans in need. Hopefully, we can make a bit of difference through these goodie bag distribution efforts.”
Mr Lim Hock Chee, CEO of Sheng Siong Group, said: “We are glad to have the opportunity to play a small part in helping these households have an enjoyable Chinese New Year. By supplying the food items and packing the goodie bags, we hope the well wishes from the business community will warm the hearts of these families during the festive period.”
Mr Yee Wee Tang, Managing Director, Grab Singapore, said: “Grab is always keen to support initiatives like these that allow us to give back to the community. What’s even more heartening is seeing our Grabbers, as well as driver- and delivery-partners work together as one team to lend a helping hand to the less privileged. We hope our simple gesture will spread the festive cheer to more people this Chinese New Year.”
Business China values diversity and inclusivity, and this goodie bag distribution drive is a strong testament to the philanthropic efforts of our business leaders and partners.
“I’m heartened by the involvement of our Singapore and China business leaders based in Singapore in this initiative. This successful distribution drive not only enabled us to make a difference to those in need, but will also motivate us to continue seeking ways to make meaningful contributions to the community,” said Dr Koh.
