Directors of Business China
All media friends,

A very good afternoon to you all.

Thank you for attending the media launch of Business China Awards.
As Mr Chua has mentioned earlier, Business China Awards is the first of its kind which recognizes role models who have helped to enhance relations between Singapore and China.

As a member of the Business China board, I am honoured to be organising this pioneer award.

Together with the Business China secretariat and support from my SPH colleagues, The Business Times and Lianhe Zaobao, we started planning for this award since last year. After a year of piecing together the details, I am pleased to announce the three award categories.

They are: Business China Excellence Award, Business China Young Achiever Award and Business China Enterprise Award.

For the first two award categories, Business China Excellence Award and Business China Young Achiever award, we are looking for outstanding individuals from Singapore and Greater China. They could be businessmen, entrepreneurs or professionals. A candidate should be either a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident, or a Resident of Greater China.

If a candidate is a Singapore citizen or PR, he or she should be involved in a business enterprise or profession in China. If candidate is a Resident of Greater China, he or she should be involved in a business enterprise or profession in Singapore.

They will be judged in four areas, namely, financial performance, contribution to Singapore-China relationships, Managerial Skills
and Personal Qualities.

Candidates for Business China Excellence Award and Business China Young Achiever Award should possess great vision and astute foresight, someone who has won the respect of his or her subordinates and whose actions set an example for his or her organization or profession.

The difference between these two award categories is an extra criterion for Business China Young Achiever award: the candidates have to be below 40 years of age.

The third category, Business China Enterprise Award, is open to Singaporean or Chinese companies and organizations registered in Singapore.

These companies and organisations will be judged in the areas of Financial Performance, Contribution to Singapore-China relationships, Innovation and Company Management.

The unique criterion across all categories is “Contribution to Singapore-China relationships”. This contribution of the candidate can be in the areas of business, economic, social or culture.

On our judging panel are representatives from the business world, civil societies, academia and media. Chairing this panel is Mr Lim Chee Onn, who is also a board director of Business China.

Judging will take place from August to September, and announcement of results will happen on the morning of 23rdNovember. On the same evening, a gala dinner concludes the awards for 2010.

From now till 4th June, we welcome nominations to the Business China Secretariat.

With the Business China Awards, we hope that more will be encouraged to do more in the relationship-building between Singapore and China.

Together with the organising committee and judging panel, we look forward to good response in nominations for this inaugural Business China Awards.

Thank you.
