On 30 January 2023, Business China held the year’s first event in the Business China Youth Series. The dialogue session with our CEO, Mr Ho Chee Hin attracted over 60 youths including members of the Business China Youth Group (BCYC) and “Friends of BCYC”.
Mr Ho shared his experience of working and studying in China and Europe, as well as his experience in the public sector. The dialogue was moderated by BCYC President Mr Tek Kai Zhen and emceed by ex-BCYC Vice President (Internal) Ms Sun Wenzhen.
Differences between the Chinese and their international counterparts
Mr Ho pointed out that people in China would prefer to discuss politics, economics, industry prospects and current affairs during casual meetups, instead of sharing about their social life. In contrast, Singaporeans would be more inclined to chat about their daily lives. Mr Ho encouraged Singaporean youths to become more politically aware, stay up-to-date with the latest happenings around the world, and learn to think critically.
Acquire the global mindset to succeed overseas
Mr Ho offered some suggestions on how Singaporean youths can become more global-ready:
- Being willing to try, explore and learn;
- Be open-minded, adaptable, and self-aware;
- Prioritise social capital.
He noted that having clear self-awareness is of utmost importance. You would need to have a good understanding of yourself to establish your self-identity. In addition, building a trustworthy network and strengthening your personal branding would also be helpful.
Improve Mandarin skills and gain a better understanding of the Chinese culture
Mr Ho recommended that youths immerse themselves in a bicultural and bilingual environment and practise Mandarin in practical scenarios, such as at the workplace or by participating in the Singapore-China Youth Interns Exchange Scheme (YES).
Furthermore, he suggested that youths step up to lead organisations such as the Business China Youth Chapter, to connect with like-minded individuals and grow their bilingual and bicultural competencies.
As China’s economy becomes increasingly dynamic, Singaporean youths must continue to develop their strengths in bilingualism and biculturalism and deepen their understanding of China.
