DEEPENING REFORMS AND THE CHINA DREAM
Business China collaborated with Yishun Junior College (YJC) to co-organise the 7th China Studies Seminar on 2 August 2014. Centered on the theme of “Deepening Reforms and the China Dream”, the seminar attracted some 400 pre-university students and two teams each from two China institutions, Beijing Zhongguancun High School and Fushun No. 2 Senior High School. The seminar had both English and Chinese segments, where students presented, debated and explored different societal, economic, environmental and political issues related to China.
This year, Professor Zheng Yongnian, Director of East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore, graced the Seminar with a keynote presentation. In his keynote speech, he emphasised China’s status as the world’s largest economy and the largest trading state, and that any reforms within the country would have a serious impact on the lives of citizens in other countries. Thus, Professor Zheng urged students to continue to follow closely and understand the developments of China to stay relevant.
Prior to the seminar, 25 original research papers from 10 schools were submitted for inclusion in the Seminar proceedings. The papers discussed a wide range of issues and reflected the participants’ outstanding standards. The top presenter from each of the English and Chinese categories will also win the opportunity to embark on the “China Learning Journey” with the Business China Youth Chapter (BCYC) to Shandong province in December this year. The 9-day immersion trip will further enhance their understanding of contemporary China through interactions with both Singapore and local students and business leaders.
